Let's talk about the band HIM,

Main Post:

My wife and myself are pretty alternative people. We listen to a lot of metal between the two of us. Her tastes get a little more heavy than mine. I listen to a lot more "posthardcore" as you would call it. Anyway. Who is HIMs target audience? I've never met a person in the wild who listens to them. I know a few of their songs and they're good. Kinda like a softer "the cure" type of rock? I don't know, let's discuss. And if you have any recommendations, let me know where to start!

Top Comment: Oh boy, here we go. I was completely obsessed with the band in my freshman year of high school. And I mean obsessed. I wore a HIM shirt to school everyday (I had about 20 shirts of theirs), I bought all their albums on CD, plus all the European singles and special editions with the only money a 14 year old could muster, bought a Ville Valo cloak replica on eBay, and ran a HIM fan page Xanga page I kept up with daily. I'm not bragging, this is insanely embarrassing to admit, especially due to my music taste that would form soon after I stopped listening/following the band, which also marked the formal exit to my cringey blunder years. Anyway, since their inception as a band, their true fanbase has always been teenage mall goths and the casual alternative fan. I don't even know the last time they toured, but I'd reckon the fans who still go to see them live are the same kinds of people who still show up to early 2000s emo pop punk--either they never cared to explore other forms of music outside their younger years, or they still listen and go see them perform for the nostalgia. Or both. I don't see any HIM fans nowadays myself either because they were essentially a gateway band into better executed rock, metal and goth music. I still just imagine them as a teenage boyband that appeals to kids who wanted darker, more poetic music but didn't know where to start...or just wanted to listen to music Bam Margera listened to. I tried relistening just recently actually, but couldn't understand why I liked the band so much. Their songwriting is just...bad and simplistic, and Valo has literally been writing the same song with the same themes for over two decades.

What part of speech is 'him'?

Main Post:

I'm learning Arabic grammar right now, and I was thinking of examples of an Ism, which refers to a person, place, thing, ideas, adjectives, and adverbs generally. Anyways, I was thinking about the word 'him' as it's used in slang, such as "HE'S HIM!" Him as it's typically used is a pronoun, but I was stumped on what (English) part of speech the slang 'him' would be? I was thinking a noun because the subject is in a state of him-ness, contrasted with 'him' usually referring to the person directly, but I'm stumped.

Edit: Here's a link to an explanation: https://www.wikihow.com/I%27m-Him-Meaning

I should've done a better job explaining. Typically you'll see it used in context of sports competitions, when a player makes a great play, it's used similarly to "He's the GOAT" but GOAT (Greatest of All TIme) is used more sparingly in sports contexts. Here's a link to a commentator calling Stephen Curry 'him': https://www.tiktok.com/@bleacherreport/video/7163517402909510954

It definitely seemed like an etymology question, because the way it's used in that context is different than how it's normally used, but maybe I'm mistaken.

Top Comment: “It’s me” “That’s him” etc. are disjunctive pronouns. It’s a feature we inherited from French. E.g. “C’est moi”

Any Predictions for the new Jordan peele produced psychological horror, sports film “Him”

Main Post:

I love the premise of the film, I’m rly interested to see where they go with it.

Top Comment: I think it’s gonna be grosser than his other films. Like not just blood, there’s gonna be cracks and crunches and limbs bent the wrong way

I live in the US, but I was wondering how popular the band H.I.M. is here?

Main Post:

Ville Valo as the lead singer and well r/HIM is abandoned! :(

Top Comment:

HIM is currently in that rather troubled period that all bands go through. They are too old to be fresh and exciting, but too new to be nostalgic or classic.

TIL that Stephen King was so obsessed with Lou Bega’s Mambo No. 5 that his wife threatened to divorce him over it.

Top Comment: Can’t help but think of that Nathan For You bit where he has the uber driver play that song on repeat to get bad ratings. One of the dudes absolutely loses it.
